This page exists because the obvious version of it cannot be built honestly. Espresso machine noise comes from the pump during the shot and the grinder before it, and not one manufacturer in our database publishes a decibel rating for either. Every "quietest espresso machine" list you will find is therefore ranking on somebody's impression, or on nothing at all. There is one genuine third-party signal: Quiet Mark, an independent acoustic certification body that tests appliances and publishes a certified list. A handful of espresso machines carry it, and those are the machines here — presented as certified rather than ranked, because Quiet Mark publishes the certification but not the underlying decibel figures, so even they do not give us an ordering. Two things are worth saying plainly. Certification covers specific SKUs, not families: Philips' certified machines are the 2300, 3300, 4400 and 5500 LatteGo and the Rita 8000, which are different models from the Philips machines we currently hold, so none of ours is marked certified. And manufacturer claims like Philips' "SilentBrew" branding are claims, not certifications — we record them as such.
This list mixes machine types, so the ranking score is computed against the other machines on this page rather than within each type. Every card also shows the machine's within-type score, labelled with its type — that is the number to use when comparing it against others of the same kind.

Understand what the certification does and does not tell you. Quiet Mark tests a product and certifies that it meets an acoustic standard for its category. It does not publish a decibel number per product, and it does not rank certified products against each other. So the honest reading is binary: this machine has been independently assessed for noise, and the overwhelming majority have not.
Then think about which noise actually bothers you. The pump runs for the 25 to 30 seconds of a shot and is a buzz; a vibratory pump is far louder than a rotary one, though rotary pumps appear only on plumbable and prosumer machines. The grinder is usually louder than the pump but runs for a few seconds, and an enclosed bean-to-cup grinder is much quieter than a standalone grinder in open air. A bean-to-cup machine's automatic rinse cycle at power-up and shut-down is brief but happens whether or not you are ready for it, which in a shared space can be more irritating than something louder that you chose to trigger.
Weigh the whole setup rather than the machine. A quiet portafilter machine paired with a loud standalone grinder is a louder kitchen than an all-in-one, and grinder noise is the part people underestimate.
Finally, treat marketing acoustics with suspicion. "SilentBrew" and similar names describe an engineering intent, not a measurement, and no regulator polices them. Certification is checkable; branding is not. If a site quotes you decibel figures for these machines, ask where the measurement came from — because the manufacturers did not publish one.
