The Best Espresso Machines

64 machines · Updated · Ranked on published specs

This is the full ranking of every active machine in our database, ordered by a score computed from published specifications. Read it as a map rather than a verdict. A machine scoring in the nineties for a super-automatic is being measured against other super-automatics: it is the best of the machines that grind, dose and brew at a button, which is a different question from whether it can pull a better shot than a dual-boiler machine with a 58 mm portafilter. Both answers are useful; they are just answers to different questions. What the ranking does reliably surface is the machines whose specifications are unusually strong for their price and type — a brass boiler with PID at the price of a plastic thermoblock, a 58 mm commercial group on a machine that costs less than a proprietary 54 mm one, an automatic milk system on a body small enough for an apartment counter. Those are the ones worth a closer look, and they are near the top here.

This list mixes machine types, so the ranking score is computed against the other machines on this page rather than within each type. Every card also shows the machine's within-type score, labelled with its type — that is the number to use when comparing it against others of the same kind.

What to look for

Start by deciding which of three machines you are actually buying. A semi-automatic gives you a portafilter and expects you to grind, dose, tamp and steam; it has the highest ceiling and the steepest learning curve. Some semi-automatics build the grinder into the same box, which shortens that curve by handling grinding and dosing for you; the rest need a separate grinder, and that is a requirement rather than an upgrade. A bean-to-cup super-automatic removes the portafilter entirely — you press a button and a drink appears — and trades away the ability to change how the shot is extracted. None of these is more advanced than the others; they are different products.

Then look at the heating system, because it sets what the machine can do rather than how fast it does it. A thermoblock or thermocoil heats water on demand and is ready in seconds, which is why nearly every machine under $700 uses one. A heat exchanger brews and steams simultaneously from a single boiler. Dual boilers separate the two circuits entirely, which matters if you make several milk drinks in a row. PID control is a separate question from boiler type: it holds the temperature you set instead of letting a thermostat cycle around it, and it is the single feature most worth paying for on a machine you intend to learn on.

Portafilter size is the least glamorous specification and one of the most consequential. 58 mm is the commercial standard, so baskets, tampers, screens and gaskets are available from dozens of suppliers and will still be in five years. Manufacturer-specific sizes work perfectly well but tie you to one accessory catalogue.

Finally, ignore the bar number on the box. It describes the pump, not the coffee.

Frequently asked

What is the best espresso machine for a beginner?
A machine with a built-in grinder and PID temperature control removes the two variables beginners struggle with most: inconsistent grind and drifting brew temperature. If you would rather not learn at all, a bean-to-cup super-automatic makes the decision for you.
Is a 20 bar espresso machine better than a 15 bar one?
No. Both numbers describe the pump's maximum pressure, not the pressure at the coffee. Espresso extracts at roughly 9 bar, and a well-designed machine regulates its pump down to that with an over-pressure valve. A 20 bar machine and a 9 bar machine can pull an identical shot.
Do I need a separate grinder?
Unless the machine has a grinder built in, yes — and it is not an optional extra. Pre-ground coffee cannot be adjusted for the fineness espresso needs, so a machine fed pre-ground coffee will never reach its ceiling regardless of price.
How long should an espresso machine last?
It depends far more on materials and descaling than on price. Machines with brass or stainless boilers and commercial group hardware are routinely kept running for well over a decade because the wear parts are standard. Scale, not use, is what kills machines.
