Every machine in this ranking grinds its own coffee, but they do it for two very different reasons. On a portafilter machine with an integrated grinder, the grinder doses directly into the basket and you still tamp, lock in and pull the shot yourself — the grinder is there to remove a separate appliance and its footprint, not to remove you. On a bean-to-cup machine the grinder feeds an internal brew group and you never see the coffee at all. Both are represented here, and the ranking compares each against machines of its own type rather than across the divide. What is worth understanding before you buy either is that the grinder is the component that most determines whether espresso tastes good, and an integrated grinder is necessarily a compromise on size, burr diameter and motor. It is a very good compromise — modern integrated conical burrs with twenty-five or thirty settings are genuinely capable — but it is the part of the machine you cannot replace without replacing the machine.
This list mixes machine types, so the ranking score is computed against the other machines on this page rather than within each type. Every card also shows the machine's within-type score, labelled with its type — that is the number to use when comparing it against others of the same kind.

Under nine inches wide and 17 lb, with the same automatic 0.5 litre milk carafe as the rest of the Prestige line.

Ceramic flat burrs and an integrated 0.5 litre milk carafe that froths automatically, in Gaggia's smallest super-auto body.

58 mm portafilter, 45 grind settings and Auto MilQ automatic texturing with alternative-milk profiles in one touchscreen machine.

Ten grind settings — twice the Magenta's — a 300 g hopper and an automatic milk carafe, made in Italy.

Two heating systems in a full-size Eletta body, so a second milk drink does not wait on the first.

Forty-six specialties — the largest published drinks list in JURA's home range.

Two thermoblocks and two grinders, 35 specialties, 18 kg — this is JURA's office machine wearing a home badge.

The top of De'Longhi's automatic range: dual heating, a 19 bar pump and cold milk texturing as well as hot.

Five drinks on a touch display, 12-step ceramic burrs, and up to 5,000 cups between descales with AquaClean.

Eight drinks, five aroma strengths and two user profiles on the same LatteGo platform — the middle of the Philips range.

Count the grind settings and understand what the number means. Espresso lives in a narrow band of fineness, and dialling in means making small adjustments within that band. A grinder with eight settings makes bigger jumps than one with thirty, so you are more likely to land between two settings, one too fast and one too slow. Thirty settings is not three times better than ten, but it is meaningfully easier to work with.
Check burr type. Conical burrs are the norm in integrated grinders because they fit a smaller space and run cooler at low speed. Flat burrs, more common on bean-to-cup machines and standalone grinders, tend to produce a more uniform particle size. Both make good espresso; neither is a reason to choose a machine on its own.
Ask whether the grinder doses by weight, by time or by a sensor. Time-based dosing drifts as beans age and as burrs season, which means periodic recalibration. Systems that measure or sense the dose hold consistency for longer.
Consider single-dosing. If you want to switch between coffees frequently, a hopper full of beans is a nuisance — you have to empty and purge it. Machines with removable or swappable hoppers make this trivial; most do not.
Finally, weigh the alternative honestly. The money spent on an integrated grinder would buy a standalone grinder of similar quality, and that grinder would outlive the machine, work with your next machine, and be replaceable on its own. The integrated version wins on space and simplicity. It is a lifestyle decision, not a performance one.
