This is a schedule to plan around, not a manufacturer instruction. If your machine has a descale counter, treat this as the floor and the machine's prompt as the ceiling — those counters usually count brew cycles rather than measuring your actual water.
Three units for one measurement
The reason water hardness feels confusing is that nobody agrees on how to express it. Your US water utility publishes grains per gallon. Your machine's manual sets its filter reminder in ppm. The test strip in the box reads in German degrees, °dH, for historical reasons that have nothing to do with you. They all measure the same thing: 1 gpg is about 17.1 ppm, and 1 °dH is about 17.8 ppm.
Anything under about 60 ppm is soft, 60–120 moderately hard, 120–180 hard, and above that very hard. Most US municipal supplies land in the middle two bands, which is exactly the range where descaling every few months is enough and neglect is expensive.
Why thermoblock machines are less forgiving
A brass boiler holds a litre of water in a vessel with wide openings; scale builds on its walls for years before it changes anything you can feel. A thermoblock heats water on demand as it passes through a narrow channel machined into a metal block. The same deposit that is cosmetic in a boiler is a restriction in a thermoblock, and a restriction becomes a blockage. That is why nearly every machine under $700 is more sensitive to descaling discipline than the prosumer machines that cost five times as much.
What not to do
Do not solve hardness with distilled water alone. Near-zero-mineral water extracts poorly, can be corrosive to boiler metals, and stops conductivity-based water-level sensors from detecting a full tank — machines report empty while sitting in water. And do not descale with vinegar: it has no corrosion inhibitors, it is very hard to rinse out, and several manufacturers advise against it explicitly.

- How often should I descale my espresso machine?
- Between roughly every six weeks and every six months, set by water hardness rather than the calendar. Hard water at the short end, filtered soft water at the long end. Thermoblock machines need it more often than large brass boilers because their water passages are far narrower.
- How do I find out my water hardness?
- Use the test strip supplied with the machine, or look up the figure your water utility publishes in its annual water quality report. US utilities usually quote grains per gallon; machine manuals usually quote ppm; test strips usually read in German degrees.
- What is a good water hardness for espresso?
- Roughly 50–100 ppm total hardness. Below that the water extracts flat, hollow coffee and can be aggressive toward boiler metals; above it you are trading cup quality for scale you will have to remove.
- Does a water filter mean I never have to descale?
- No. A filter reduces hardness rather than eliminating it, and filters expire. It typically extends the interval by well under double — useful, not exempting.
