How to Use a Krups Espresso Machine
Updated
Fill and prime the tank, let the machine reach temperature, load the filter basket, lock the portafilter in with a firm clockwise turn, and press the brew button — aiming for a shot that takes about 25 seconds. Krups machines mostly ship with pressurized baskets, so crema comes easily and grind adjustment matters less than it would on a non-pressurized machine.
First use
Rinse the tank and fill it with fresh filtered water. Run a full tank through the group and steam wand without coffee to flush manufacturing residue and prime the pump — on a dry machine the pump may run noisily for several seconds before water appears, which is normal.
Let the machine reach temperature before the first shot. The ready light indicates the heater, not the group, so a few minutes more is worth it.
Making a shot
1. Choose the basket. Most Krups models supply single and double pressurized baskets; use the one that matches your dose.
2. Fill and level the coffee. With a pressurized basket, tamping pressure matters much less than it does on a commercial-style basket — level and lightly compacted is enough.
3. Lock the portafilter into the group with a firm turn until it seats.
4. Place the cup and press the brew control. Expect a slow, dark stream after a few seconds.
5. Stop when you have roughly double the weight of the dry coffee in liquid, usually 25 to 30 seconds.
Milk
Krups machines typically use an assisted frothing attachment rather than a bare wand. Purge it first, then insert it into cold milk and open the steam control fully; the sleeve draws in air automatically.
This produces foam rather than microfoam — good for cappuccino, not for latte art. Clean the attachment immediately after every use; dried milk in the sleeve is the usual reason it stops frothing.
Maintenance
Descale on the schedule in your model's manual — typically every one to three months depending on water hardness. Krups publishes model-specific manuals and descaling instructions, and using the approved solution protects the warranty.
Rinse the drip tray and baskets regularly, and run a blank shot of water through the group after each session to clear grounds.

Frequently asked
- Why is my Krups espresso machine not producing crema?
- Usually stale coffee or a grind that is too coarse even for a pressurized basket. Check the roast date first — pressurized baskets are designed to produce crema from almost anything fresh.
- How do I descale a Krups espresso machine?
- Follow the descaling procedure in your model's manual with an approved descaling solution, then rinse with at least two full tanks of clean water through both the group and the steam wand.
- Why is the pump loud and no water is coming out?
- The pump has lost its prime, usually after running the tank dry. Refill, and run the steam or hot-water control until water flows steadily before brewing again.
- Can I use non-pressurized baskets in a Krups machine?
- Only where the manufacturer supplies them for your model. Fitting a commercial-style basket to a machine designed around pressurized ones usually requires a much better grinder than the machine assumes.
