How to Clean a Steam Wand

Every use, without exception
1. As soon as you finish texturing, wipe the wand with a damp cloth kept for that purpose.
2. Open the steam briefly into the drip tray to blow out whatever milk was drawn back up into the tip as it cooled.
3. Wipe again. The whole routine takes five seconds and is the difference between a wand that works for years and one that stops in a fortnight.
Weekly and when blocked
Remove the tip if your machine allows and soak it in hot water or a milk-system cleaning solution for fifteen minutes, then clear each hole with a pin and purge before reuse.
Some machines have a dedicated steam-wand cleaning program or a soaking cap; use it if provided.
For an automatic milk system with internal tubing, run the machine's cleaning cycle after every session. Milk left in a warm line is a hygiene problem, not just a taste one.
What not to do
Do not leave the wand sitting in a jug of water to soak while the machine is on — some machines will draw that water back into the boiler.
Do not scrape the tip with anything metal and hard; the holes are precisely sized and enlarging one ruins the steam pattern.
