Espresso Machine Leaking Water

Find where the water is arriving before you do anything else. A leak around the portafilter is almost always a worn group gasket or grounds on the rim; water under the machine is usually the drip tray or the tank seal; water during a shot only is a group or pressure-relief issue. Each has a different fix and only one of them is urgent.
Around the portafilter, during a shot
This is the most common leak and the most benign. Two causes account for nearly all of it. First, coffee grounds on the rim of the basket or the group gasket, which break the seal — wipe the rim before locking in. Second, a group gasket that has hardened with age and no longer compresses; the tell is that the portafilter handle sits further round than it used to when locked.
Gaskets are consumable. On a machine used daily they last roughly a year, they cost a few dollars, and replacing one is a ten-minute job on most machines with a 58 mm group.
Under the machine, any time
Check the drip tray first — it is usually the answer and it is usually just full. Many machines have a float that rises when the tray is full and nothing that stops you carrying on.
Next, the water tank and its seal. Tanks crack at the seams, and their gaskets perish. Take the tank out, dry the recess completely, fill the tank and stand it on a dry counter for ten minutes: if the counter is wet, the tank is the leak; if the machine recess is wet, the fault is inside.
Water appearing only after a shot, from underneath, is usually the three-way solenoid valve dumping pressure into the tray — that is the valve working as designed, not a leak.
When to stop using it
Water inside the housing, near electrics, or arriving with the machine idle and cold is different from the cases above. Unplug it and stop. A leaking boiler or a failed pressure-relief valve is a service matter, and a machine that leaks while cold is leaking under mains pressure or from a joint that has failed.
Scale is the usual root cause of internal leaks, because deposits prevent seals from seating. That is the argument for descaling on schedule rather than when the machine asks.
