How to Look After a Bean-to-Cup Brew Group

If your machine's brew group comes out, rinse it under warm water weekly and let it dry before refitting — no detergent, no dishwasher. If it does not come out, run the machine's cleaning-tablet cycle on schedule, because that is the only access anyone has to it.
Why it matters more than anything else on the machine
The brew group is the assembly that doses, compresses and brews the coffee. Every shot passes through it and leaves oils behind. It is also the part most likely to end a bean-to-cup machine's life, because a seized or heavily fouled group is usually an uneconomic repair.
Whether it is removable is the single biggest long-term ownership difference between two otherwise similar machines, and it is rarely mentioned at the point of sale.
Weekly, if it comes out
1. Switch the machine off and open the service door.
2. Release the catch and slide the group out. Do not force it — if it will not come, the machine usually needs to be in a specific position first.
3. Rinse under warm running water. No detergent: residues are hard to rinse from the internal passages and will taint shots.
4. Let it drain and dry, then refit until it clicks. Refitting a wet group is the usual cause of a group that will not seat.
5. Lubricate the guide rails with the food-safe grease your manufacturer supplies, roughly monthly.
If it does not come out
Run the cleaning-tablet cycle at the interval the manufacturer specifies, and do not skip it — it is the only cleaning that reaches the group.
Expect to budget for a service at some point in the machine's life, because eventually the group will need attention that a tablet cannot provide.
Empty the grounds container before it packs solid; a compacted container puts load on the ejection mechanism.
