05Water circuit fault

You can fix this

What the machine is reporting

A problem occurred in the water circuit. Cause: There is air in the water circuit.

Likely causes, most likely first

  1. Air in the water circuit
  2. Water tank not inserted correctly or its seat is dirty
  3. Air trapped in the INTENZA+ filter
  4. Water filter restricting flow

What to do

  1. 1. Remove and reinsert the tank in the machine a couple of times. Make sure you insert the tank correctly.
  2. 2. Check that the water tank seat is clean.
  3. 3. If you use an 'INTENZA+' filter: pull the filter out of the water tank and shake it to remove the air, then place it back.
  4. 4. Alternatively remove the water filter to see whether it is restricting water flow.
  5. 5. If none of the above help, the unit will need professional repairs.

When to stop and call a technician

Never bypass, disable or remove a safety device — a thermal fuse, pressure relief valve or lid interlock is the part standing between a fault and a fire. Do not open a pressurised boiler or work on mains wiring.

Frequently asked

What does Gaggia 05 mean?
A problem occurred in the water circuit. Cause: There is air in the water circuit.
Can I fix this myself?
Yes. This is a user-serviceable condition and the steps above are the ones the manufacturer publishes. If it returns straight after you complete them, stop and book service.
Where do these steps come from?
They are transcribed from GAGGIA MAGENTA PLUS RI8700 Operating instructions, 4219-465-05151 Rev 02, 'Error code key' p.31. We do not repair machines and we do not publish a fix we cannot cite to the manufacturer.
Will this code clear on its own?
Maintenance prompts clear when the cycle they are asking for is completed in full — stopping partway usually leaves the counter running. Fault codes clear when the underlying condition is corrected, not by power-cycling past them.
