What the machine is reporting

the coffee grinder in your espresso machine is not working as it should due to a coffee funnel blockage

Likely causes, most likely first

  1. Coffee funnel / grinder outlet blocked by clogged coffee grounds
  2. Oily or damp beans caking in the chute

What to do

  1. 1. Switch the machine off and unplug it.
  2. 2. Remove the brew group.
  3. 3. Open the lid of the pre-ground coffee funnel and insert a spoon handle into the funnel (insert from below if the model has no pre-ground funnel).
  4. 4. Move the spoon handle up and down until the clogged coffee grounds fall down.
  5. 5. Vacuum the coffee outlet to remove the loosened grounds.
  6. 6. Refit the brew group and restart the machine.

When to stop and call a technician

Never bypass, disable or remove a safety device — a thermal fuse, pressure relief valve or lid interlock is the part standing between a fault and a fire. Do not open a pressurised boiler or work on mains wiring.

Frequently asked

What does Philips 01 mean?
the coffee grinder in your espresso machine is not working as it should due to a coffee funnel blockage
Can I fix this myself?
Yes. This is a user-serviceable condition and the steps above are the ones the manufacturer publishes. If it returns straight after you complete them, stop and book service.
Where do these steps come from?
They are transcribed from Philips support article XC000004106, 'I see an error code on my Philips Espresso Machine'. We do not repair machines and we do not publish a fix we cannot cite to the manufacturer.
Will this code clear on its own?
Maintenance prompts clear when the cycle they are asking for is completed in full — stopping partway usually leaves the counter running. Fault codes clear when the underlying condition is corrected, not by power-cycling past them.
