Espresso Machine Not Producing Steam: Causes and Fixes

When the steam wand gives you nothing, or only a weak hiss and spitting water, the tip is the first thing to check. Milk dries inside the holes within minutes of use and hardens into a plug that no amount of steam pressure will clear. Pull the wand out of the pitcher, point it at the drip tray, and purge. If nothing comes out, the tip is blocked. The second most common cause is procedural rather than mechanical: single boiler machines need to switch modes and climb to steam temperature, which takes 30 seconds or more, and they will not steam properly until the ready light settles. After those two, look at water supply, then at scale in the steam path, which chokes the narrow tip holes from the inside. Faults involving the steam boiler, its element, or its thermostat sit behind a pressure vessel and are a technician's work.

Work down the list. Each cause has a check you can perform before you change anything, so you are diagnosing rather than swapping parts.
1. The steam tip holes are blocked with dried milk

What to do: Unscrew the tip and soak it in hot milk-system cleaner for 15 to 30 minutes, then clear each hole with the pin supplied with the machine or a straightened paperclip and rinse. Purge for two seconds after every future steaming session to stop it recurring.
2. The machine is not in steam mode or has not reached steam temperature

3. There is no water reaching the steam boiler

4. Scale has narrowed the steam path or the tip from the inside

5. The steam valve seal is leaking internally, so pressure escapes before it reaches the wand

6. The steam thermostat, element, or boiler control has failed

- The machine is under warranty — opening it yourself usually ends that cover.
Never bypass, disable or remove a safety device — a thermal fuse, pressure relief valve or lid interlock is the part standing between a fault and a fire. Do not open a pressurised boiler or work on mains wiring.
