Espresso Machine Not Pumping Water: Causes and Fixes

If your machine hums but no water reaches the group, the most likely cause is an airlock: the pump has lost its prime and is moving air instead of water. That happens after the tank runs dry, after the machine sits unused for a few weeks, or right after you pull the tank out and refit it. Start there before you assume the pump is dead. Check the level, reseat the tank firmly so its outlet valve opens, then run the hot water function or open the steam valve with the portafilter removed for 20 to 30 seconds to draw water back through. If nothing changes, work outward in order: tank intake screen, water filter, then the shower screen. Scale is the next most common blocker on machines run for a year on hard water with no descaling. A genuinely failed pump is uncommon and sounds different, either silent or harshly buzzing rather than the usual working note. Anything that would require opening the chassis is a technician job.

1. The tank is empty, not fully seated, or its outlet valve is not engaging

2. The pump has lost its prime and is airlocked

What to do: With a full tank, run hot water or steam in 20 to 30 second bursts, up to three attempts, resting 30 seconds between. Between bursts, gently rock the machine side to side to move the trapped bubble past the pump inlet. Most machines re-prime inside a minute.
3. The tank intake screen or the in-tank water filter is clogged

What to do: Rinse the screen under running water and scrub gently with a soft brush. Replace the in-tank filter cartridge if it is past its stated volume or age, and reset the filter counter afterwards if the machine tracks one.
4. Scale has narrowed the flow path through the boiler or thermoblock

A large drop, combined with hard tap water and no descale in the last 6 to 12 months, points at scale. A thermoblock is especially prone because its channel is narrow.
What to do: Run a full descale cycle with a proper descaling solution at the concentration in your manual, then two full tanks of plain water as a rinse. Repeat the cycle once if flow only partly recovers.
5. The shower screen or dispersion path at the group is blocked with coffee fines and oils
Routine maintenanceHow to confirm it: Run the brew cycle with no portafilter fitted. Water should fall from the whole screen in an even curtain. Patchy jets, one thin stream off to a side, or almost nothing means the screen is packed.
What to do: Unscrew the shower screen where your model allows it and soak both screen and dispersion block in a cleaning-tablet solution for 20 minutes, then brush and refit. If your machine has a 3-way solenoid valve, run a detergent backflush afterwards with a blind basket.
6. The pump, one-way valve, or an internal hose has failed

When to stop and call a technician

- Water is leaking from inside the chassis rather than from the tank, tray or portafilter.
- The fault involves the boiler, a pressure valve, the heating element or the pump itself.

- The machine is under warranty — opening it yourself usually ends that cover.
Never bypass, disable or remove a safety device — a thermal fuse, pressure relief valve or lid interlock is the part standing between a fault and a fire. Do not open a pressurised boiler or work on mains wiring.

- Why does my machine make noise but produce no water?
- Noise means the pump is running, so the fault is upstream or downstream of it, not in its motor. Nine times out of ten the pump is airlocked or the tank is not seated. Refill, reseat, and run hot water in short bursts to re-prime before looking further.
- Can running the machine dry damage it?
- A few seconds is harmless. Extended dry running can overheat the pump and, on some designs, the heating element. Switch off as soon as you notice no output, refill, and re-prime rather than pressing brew repeatedly.
- Will descaling fix no-water problems?
- Only when scale is the actual restriction, which usually shows as flow that faded gradually over months. Descaling does nothing for an airlock or an unseated tank, both of which appear suddenly.
- How do I know it is the pump and not a blockage?
- A blockage still lets the pump reach its normal working note and often produces a trickle. A failed pump either makes no sound at all or a rough, unchanging buzz with zero output. Confirm the tank, screen and filter are clear first, then treat persistent silence as a service call.
