Espresso Pulling Too Fast: Causes and Fixes

A shot that gushes out in ten or fifteen seconds is telling you the water met almost no resistance, and the grind setting is the reason in most cases. Go finer before you change anything else. The target is about 36 grams in the cup from an 18 gram dose in 25 to 30 seconds, and a gushing shot is usually several grinder steps away from that. The second most common cause is underdosing, which leaves a shallow bed water can push straight through. After that comes channelling, where the bed is deep enough but water has carved a route around it, and you will see that as a pale, thin stream that appears in one spot immediately. Hardware causes are less common but real: a stretched or dented basket, a single basket being used with a double dose, or burrs that have gone dull and are producing a wide, uneven particle spread.

1. The grind is too coarse

What to do: Move the grinder finer in small steps and re-pull, purging a few grams between changes so you are not timing the previous setting. Keep dose and tamp constant while you do it.
2. The dose is too low for the basket

What to do: Bring the dose up to the basket rating and level the bed before tamping. Recheck shot time afterwards, since a correct dose alone often adds several seconds.
3. Water is channelling through a poorly prepared bed

What to do: Distribute the grounds evenly across the whole basket before tamping, tamp flat and level, and stop tapping the portafilter on the counter after tamping. Wipe the rim so grounds do not break the gasket seal.
4. The wrong basket is fitted for the dose

What to do: Use the basket that matches your dose. If you regularly pull 18 grams, keep a standard double fitted and reserve the single for genuinely single doses.
5. The basket is damaged, worn, or has enlarged holes
Routine maintenanceHow to confirm it: Set the empty basket on a flat surface and look for a dented or bowed floor. Hold it to a light: heavily used cheap baskets can show visibly ragged or enlarged perforations compared with a new one.
What to do: Replace the basket. A precision basket with consistent hole size gives more repeatable shot times than a worn stock one, and it is one of the cheapest parts on the machine.
6. The grinder burrs are dull, misaligned, or the grinder cannot hold a fine setting

A wide mix of visible chunks alongside dust, or output that changes between doses at the same setting, points at the grinder rather than the technique. Note also whether you have to keep going finer month after month to hold the same shot time.
What to do: Clean the burr chamber, then check the manufacturer's burr life figure against your throughput and fit new burrs if you are past it. If the grinder was built for drip and cannot reach espresso fineness, no adjustment will fix the shot time.
When to stop and call a technician
- The machine trips a breaker, smells of burning, or shows scorched wiring.
- Water is leaking from inside the chassis rather than from the tank, tray or portafilter.
- The fault involves the boiler, a pressure valve, the heating element or the pump itself.
- The code returns immediately after a correctly completed reset or maintenance cycle.
- The machine is under warranty — opening it yourself usually ends that cover.
Never bypass, disable or remove a safety device — a thermal fuse, pressure relief valve or lid interlock is the part standing between a fault and a fire. Do not open a pressurised boiler or work on mains wiring.

- Can I fix a fast shot by tamping harder?
- No. Once the bed is compacted, extra tamp force adds very little resistance and mainly risks cracking the puck. Grind finer instead.
- Why did my shot speed up on its own?
- Common causes are a new bag of coffee, a lighter or older roast, a humidity change, or grounds building up in the grinder chute so less coffee actually reaches the basket. Weigh the dose to rule out the last one.
- Does a fast shot mean my machine is broken?
- Rarely. A gushing shot is a coffee preparation result, not a hardware fault. Machine faults usually show as low flow or no flow, not as excessive flow.
- What does a fast shot taste like?
- Thin and sour, because the water leaves before it has dissolved enough of the coffee. That sourness is a useful confirmation that you should be grinding finer rather than changing the coffee.
