Espresso Machine Weak Pressure: Causes and Fixes

Weak pressure is almost always the puck, not the pump. If water runs through your coffee too easily, the machine has nothing to push against and the gauge never climbs. Grind is the first thing to change: a grind too coarse for your basket lets water escape without resistance, and so does a dose well under the basket's rating. A standard double is roughly 18 grams in and about 36 grams out in 25 to 30 seconds, so check your numbers against that before touching anything mechanical. Also confirm which basket you are using, because a pressurised basket creates its resistance artificially and behaves differently from a standard one. Only after grind, dose and basket check out should you look at a worn group gasket, a blocked screen, or scale. Ignore the bar number printed on the box. Brew pressure at the puck is about 9 bar on almost every machine, and a 15 or 20 bar pump rating tells you nothing about what reaches your coffee.

Work down the list. Each cause has a check you can perform before you change anything, so you are diagnosing rather than swapping parts.
1. The grind is too coarse or the dose too low for the basket
You can fix thisHow to confirm it: Weigh the dry dose and the liquid in the cup. If 18 grams gives you 36 grams in under 20 seconds, water is meeting almost no resistance. Look at the spent puck too: soupy and loose rather than firm and intact confirms it.
What to do: Step the grinder finer, two or three clicks at a time on a stepped grinder, and re-pull between changes. Bring the dose up to the basket's rating. Adjust one variable per shot so you can see what moved the time.
2. Water is channelling through the puck instead of soaking it evenly
You can fix thisHow to confirm it: Look at the underside of the puck after the shot. A crater, a hole, or a wet streak down one side means water found a shortcut. Watch the naked or spouted flow start: an early squirt from one point is channelling.
What to do: Level the grounds before tamping, tamp flat rather than hard, and stop knocking the portafilter after tamping, which cracks the puck. Wipe the basket rim clean so it seals against the gasket.
3. The basket is the wrong type or size for what you are doing
You can fix thisHow to confirm it: Turn the basket over. A pressurised basket has a single small hole or a plastic insert on the base. A standard basket is perforated across the whole floor. Using a single basket with a double dose, or the reverse, also throws resistance off.
What to do: Match the basket to the dose and to your grinder. Standard baskets need a grinder that can hold a fine, consistent setting. Pressurised baskets are more forgiving with pre-ground coffee, but they mask the gauge reading rather than improving extraction.
4. The group gasket has hardened and no longer seals the portafilter
Routine maintenanceHow to confirm it: Look for coffee dribbling from the rim of the portafilter during the shot, or a portafilter handle that now sits much further round than it did when new. Press a fingernail into the gasket: a serviceable one is still rubbery, a spent one is glassy and cracked.
What to do: Fit a new group gasket of the correct thickness for your model. Scrape the old one out with a plastic pick rather than a screwdriver so you do not score the group seat.
5. Scale has restricted flow into the group
Routine maintenanceHow to confirm it: Run a blank shot with no portafilter and watch the flow rate. If it is noticeably weaker than it used to be and your water is hard, scale in the thermoblock or boiler outlet is the likely restriction.
What to do: Descale with a proper solution, then flush two full tanks of clean water through both the brew and hot water paths. Fit or renew a water filter afterwards so the deposit does not rebuild.
6. The pump or the over-pressure valve has drifted or failed
Call a technicianHow to confirm it: With a blind basket fitted, run the brew cycle. A healthy machine builds and holds pressure against a blind basket. If the gauge barely lifts against a sealed basket, the fault is inside the machine, not in the coffee.
What to do: Stop and call a technician. The over-pressure valve is a safety-related pressure component and the pump sits on mains voltage inside a wet chassis. Do not adjust or remove either yourself.
When to stop and call a technician
This fault is on the technician side of that line. Do the user-serviceable checks above and no more.
- The machine trips a breaker, smells of burning, or shows scorched wiring.
- Water is leaking from inside the chassis rather than from the tank, tray or portafilter.
- The fault involves the boiler, a pressure valve, the heating element or the pump itself.
- The code returns immediately after a correctly completed reset or maintenance cycle.
- The machine is under warranty — opening it yourself usually ends that cover.
Never bypass, disable or remove a safety device — a thermal fuse, pressure relief valve or lid interlock is the part standing between a fault and a fire. Do not open a pressurised boiler or work on mains wiring.

- That number is the pump's maximum dead-head rating, not what reaches the coffee. Brew pressure at the puck sits around 9 bar on a correctly set machine. A low gauge reading during a shot reflects the resistance your puck is creating, not the pump's ceiling.
- Should the gauge sit in the green zone the whole shot?
- It should climb during the first few seconds and settle in the brew band for most of the shot, then fall as the puck gives way at the end. A needle that never leaves the bottom means the puck is too loose.
- Does a blind basket test hurt the machine?
- No, provided you keep it to a few seconds. It is the standard way to separate a puck problem from a machine problem, and it is the same basket used for backflushing on machines with a 3-way solenoid valve.
- Can old coffee cause weak pressure?
- Yes. Coffee that has been ground for days, or roasted months ago, loses structure and lets water pass more freely. Grind fresh and check the roast date before chasing hardware faults.
