Milk System Not Producing Foam: Causes and Fixes

When an automatic milk system stops making foam, the air intake is the first place to look. These systems work by drawing air into the milk stream through a small hole or a labelled air vent, and dried milk seals that hole faster than anything else on the machine. Take the milk unit apart, find the air port, and hold it to a light: if you cannot see through it, that is the fault. Next comes the milk itself, because temperature and composition change foam more than most people expect. Milk straight from the fridge at around 40°F foams reliably, while milk that has been sitting out, or has already been heated once, will not build a stable texture. After that, check that the intake tube is fully pushed on and free of cracks. Weak steam pressure is the last user-checkable cause before service.
