The Best Espresso Machines for Apartments

37 machines · Updated · Ranked on published specs

An apartment kitchen imposes constraints a house kitchen usually does not, and they are not the ones buying guides talk about. Width is the obvious one, and it is the specification manufacturers publish least prominently — you will find heat-up time in the headline and the actual footprint three tabs deep. Weight is the quiet one: a 35 kg machine is not something you slide aside to use the counter for something else, so it claims its space permanently in a way a 9 kg machine does not. And rental kitchens tend to have shallow counters and low wall cabinets, which makes depth and the clearance needed to lift a water tank lid matter as much as the width does. This ranking filters on published width and weight — nothing wider than about 13 inches or heavier than 22 kg — and orders what is left against each other. What you give up is mostly capacity: smaller tanks, smaller hoppers, more frequent refills. What you do not have to give up is quality. Several of the narrowest machines here carry brass boilers, PID control or commercial-standard groups.

This list mixes machine types, so the ranking score is computed against the other machines on this page rather than within each type. Every card also shows the machine's within-type score, labelled with its type — that is the number to use when comparing it against others of the same kind.

What to look for

Measure before you shortlist, and measure three dimensions rather than one. Width is what everyone checks. Depth including the water tank and any rear clearance is what catches people out on shallow rental counters. Height including the space needed to open the lid is what makes a machine that technically fits under a cabinet unusable there.

Think about where steam and heat go. A machine tucked under a wall cabinet vents steam upward into that cabinet every time you texture milk, which over months is a real problem for the cabinet. Machines pushed flat against a wall need rear clearance for airflow, and rear-filling water tanks mean pulling the machine forward several times a week.

Accept the capacity trade deliberately. A compact machine typically holds a litre or a litre and a half against two or more, which is four to six drinks between refills. In a one- or two-person household that is genuinely nothing; with guests it becomes the machine's defining characteristic.

Consider noise honestly, with the caveat that nobody publishes figures. Vibratory pumps buzz for the length of a shot and grinders are louder still. In an apartment with thin walls and a partner who wakes at seven, that is worth knowing before rather than after. Rotary pumps are much quieter and much more expensive; we do not rank on noise because no manufacturer in this database publishes a decibel rating, and we are not going to invent one.

Finally, weigh whether a machine without a built-in grinder actually saves space. A separate grinder needs its own footprint, so the all-in-one that looks wider on paper is often smaller in total.

Frequently asked

What is the smallest espresso machine that makes good espresso?
Several machines under six inches wide use standard 15 bar pumps and real steam wands. The compromise is tank size and the absence of a built-in grinder, not the quality of the extraction.
Are espresso machines loud enough to annoy neighbours?
The pump buzzes for the 25–30 seconds of a shot and a built-in grinder is louder for a few seconds before it. No manufacturer in our database publishes a decibel figure, so we do not rank on noise — but rotary-pump machines are audibly quieter than vibratory ones.
Can I keep an espresso machine in a cupboard and take it out to use?
You can, but you probably will not. Machines with real thermal mass need fifteen to twenty minutes to come up to temperature, so anything that has to be lifted out first tends to get used at weekends only.
Do I need a dedicated circuit?
Not for home machines. Everything in this ranking runs on a standard US 120 V outlet, though it is worth not sharing a circuit with a kettle or toaster you use at the same time.
